Seiches/ tidal waves/ rissaga/ resaca - 7:48 PM, Jun. 22, 2006

After Savarna's tales of tsunami warning in Menorca, went Googling again, and came upon the expalanation of what happened there, and what we experienced in the Adriatic.Apparently caused by "abrupt disturance in atmospheric pressure" - like big black cloud comes along, sucks up the sea, throws 40 boat on the rocks then tootles off again. Really spooky.

For doc on the Menorca / Adriatic phenomenon, see http://ioc3.unesco.org/itic/files/2005_Oct-Dec_screen.pdf

A serious warning to all who cruise those waters to keep a keen eye on the barometer

If one's boat is wrecked by a resaca, does the insurance pay up??????

Hi Olive Oyle - 4:03 PM, Jul. 11, 2006

Thanks for your post on resaca's - most interesting as was the Unesco report. We are certainly inexperienced when it comes to Med weather conditions but interestingly we had commented during the day in question while crossing from Mallorca to Menorca that the sky was very threatening almost like the still before a big storm and we were consequently keeping a close eye on the barometer. It barely moved over a 24 hour period though.
Interesting to read your blog and congratulations on your purchase - we have blasted out in a major way as you will have seen on our blog - but you're a long time dead so we must get and live our dreams.
Maybe our paths will cross one day and we can share a few vino's
Cheers
Keith
