so every idiotic story told at the IYAC begins the same way:
"SO THERE we were. eighty nautical miles east of the flemish cap. the sea was angry that day, my friend... but I stepped onto the foredeck and said BEHOLD! EVERYTHING IS FINE! I AM HERE!!...."
i can't think of how this one is any different, but i've sure heard many renditions of a simple snafu over the course of 24 hours.
SO THERE WE WERE... motoring... nigh DRIFTING about with the main up and luffing rather lazily. everyone was doing the same thing waiting for the RC to get their act together, determine a course and get this show on the road.
but there was neither show nor road because there was no wind. i was glad of the rain. but alas it was honking at an impressive .5 kts with gusts up to 1.
Nirvana decided to come up from behind passing across our transom from stbd to port. they got a little close as david swung his boat to their port and caught our mizzen boom in their mizzen backstay. i was in the cockpit for this fiasco and witnessed our topping lift popping as the boom crutch was pulled out of its purchase. Ti was dragged along with the ass end of NIRVANA. crash. our boom listed to port and then came sweeping down as it had nothing holding it up but the ever tipping crutch. i recognized this as my opportunity to get the HELL out of dodge in case the crutch should fail. as I look up to get out of the cockpit, I see David standing sadly on the back of his boat apologizing while his backstay pulls off the top third of his mizzen and immediately bashes him on his head. blood everywhere. all this and he still can't stop apologizing. i felt really bad.
not a whole lot to that story. that's what happened. no big deal. at the end of the day, Ti merely had a scratch in the varnish and the important thing is that david is okay.
for the last two days i've had people coming up to me reciting all kinds of idiotic fabrications of what NEVER happened... no, TI never hit anyone. no, i was not at the helm. and no, it's not a big deal. so let's all talk about something else, thanks. |
