The Ups & Downs of Winter SailingWell what a contrast... last sunday a blast home from Swanwick with a F8 gusting 9 up our chuff but sunny, this Sunday grey and dull northerlies threatening rain. Still we enjoyed ourselves and our new crew, on the water for the first time didn't disgrace himself though he turned rather grey in the Solent chop, learnt a few knots and other skills and said he'd come again much to the relief of his girlfriend, our daughter. The intervening days were a different matter entirely - wednesday afternoon pictures from the marina caused our hearts to sink and potentially our Easter holiday plans too... an Etap had managed to reverse out of control into the starboard edge of the transom leaving two gaping holes in the gel coat with glass mat fringing the edges of deep gouges - one completely through the underlying kevlar. What a contrast the marine industry is to the car one - within a couple of hours a temporary patch was being planned and completed before the evening was out (thank-you John). Our insurance company was on the case and by the weekend quotes were in progress and a lift out planned for after our holiday - all without drama - thank-you to all concerned. Contrast this to my wayward car - a morning at the garage for a job that I was promised would take an hour and still it had to go back for 2 days for further treatment to a faulty seat - earliest date late April.
