Come on in and say hello via a 'comment'. We've cruised our Hanse 46' sailboat from UK to Egypt to the Caribbean mainly two handed from 2004 to 2008 - and enjoyed every minute. We are back temporarily in the UK - but sunshine beckons us again for next summer.

New Dinghy / Cover and Revised Nav Station Layout

Posted at 11:13 AM, Thursday, April 26, 2007

Heres what our revised Nav Station layout looks like after installing the new SSB radio and modem.

You can see the added Pactor Modem (for SSB radio email decoding) laid in vertically alongside the stereo and Navtex.  We've moved the VHF radio handset which was there before, onto the aft bulkhead (you can just see it side on).  The EPIRB in that position before is now screwed to the balkhead adjacent to the companionway.

The face set of the Icom 802 is located in the slot below the shelf and above the table itself - the actual amplifyer behind wood panels alongside nav station, and the automatic antenna tuner is just below the bog antenna but inside the lazerette.

And here's our new hard floor dinghy with is new silver canvas covers - resting on the foredeck and looking (we first thought) very practical.

The cover gives the dinghy a very 'used' look which we're hoping will not just protect her from the sun, but maybe also from anyone deciding which one to nick from the jetty!

Of course, a new heafty padlock and security wire will help too.

Nice that it looks OK, but sadly they've made it an inch or two too wide so when trialling the dinghy out today at full blast - was surprised to see water being forced up twix cover and tube - quickly filling the boat!

Fortunately Mr Canvasman was in the marina so it's now off to his workshop for a trim.

Checked out all our safety gear.  Found we're well overstocked on flares (10 current rockets plus 8 expired good nick ones, for example).  Still - guess better safe than sorry.  Reading up on grab bags - with the list compiled from this particular book it will look more like a grabsuitcase.  Could seem strange hefting over a bag bigger than the liferaft.......

Not much else happening.  Spent a couple of hours yesterday by the swim area, exposing me white bits.  Results are more a pale pink than bronzed.  No burnies, so there's hope yet.

Re keep fit.  This past weekend we joined another Sunday hike up the mountains.  This time 12 km from top pastures down forested tracks to a trout farm for lunch.  My dodgy knee felt it on the Monday - so keep fit now off my agenda until it fixes itself or I elect to spend some dosh of surgery to scape off the cartilage.

Anyway - the older ladies will be pleased.

Cheers

JOHN

Sounds as if you can't wait to leave for the freedom of the open sea.
I'm reading your blog and dreaming that someday I'll sail from here (Cork) to med on my own yacht.
Someday, someday, someday :-)
Maybe when i retire like you.

Best wishes,
Sean

Right on matey.
Guess I can wait for another two weeks, but really looking forward to getting out of here despite the social scene. Lots of new places / people to see / meet this coming year and I want the time to appreciate it all.
Good luck yourself with making your own dreams a reality. But suggest you don't wait and do it when retired (like me), do it just as soon as you can.
Cheers
JOHN
