Come on in and say hello via a 'comment'. We've cruised our Hanse 46' sailboat from UK to Egypt to the Caribbean mainly two handed from 2004 to 2008 - and enjoyed every minute. We are back temporarily in the UK - but sunshine beckons us again for next summer.

15th November - 10 days to ARC start

Posted at 6:30 AM, Friday, November 16, 2007

Todays been a real non-event.

I mean the weathers still fine - variable with sun and clouds - but still 25 +.  It's all so much better than R4 (via web) weather report of - 3 early on with heavy frost over our old home.

But despite our current moderate weather, I'm stuffed up with cold and drowning in Lem-Sip.

Spent the day under blanket in cockpit watching the world go by and dropping off asleep.  Sue says I invariably nod off and start to  dribble just as the most attractive gilrs pass the back of the boat.  Nice.  It's involuntary, clearly an insight into my older age.

I'm not good when I'm not well.  Hate it.  But guess you never picked that up, eh?

Have cancelled all booked seminars today as don't want risk  contamination of the whole fleet - but have been successful with Sue who already has a sore throat.  That's actually not helped the sympathy vote on Swagman.  In fact now been kicked out to spare cabin.  Le Sweatpit.

Oh.  You might be interested as I took this shot two weeks back as yacht Gringo limped into Las Palmas.  If you are considering hull materials in a yacht build it might make you think again of the benefits in steel.

As you can see, she was rammed on her starboard side.  The French skipper and crew were lucky to escape alive and afloat only due to it being steel, after being hit by a small freighter somewhere close to here.

If it were plastic, wood or aluminiun, they'd probably be dead.

Seems the sad bu66ers don't have insurance, but the authorities should be able to track the freighter involved and they can then resolve the blame.  Barside chat says both were asleep, but thats just rumour and may well be untrue.

Surveyors have looked and the yacht can't be repaired.  Its a write off and cheaper to rebuild from scratch.  They've lost their home.  Lets hope it gets sorted in their favour. My cold is truly insignificant.  Mea culpa.

Bar side chat was untrue

Got a chance to learn more about the incident from the French skipper. They were just starting a planned 8 year sabbattical off to Pacific islands and only left Franch this fall.
Three people on board - two asleep early hours of morning - watch guy clocked the freighter - but noted it was NOT on a collision course.
He went below to wake off watch for changeover - five minutes later they all heard the freighter approaching - and tried to scramble on deck when it hit.
The top of mainmast plus mizzen collapsed over cockpit - luckily no one seriously hurt - but it took time for them to get out and untangle themselves - by when the freighter was disappearing over the horizon.
How easily this all happens eh? I'll certainly be taking more care at night from now on.
JOHN
