Come on in and say hello via a 'comment'. We've cruised our Hanse 46' sailboat from UK to Egypt to the Caribbean mainly two handed from 2004 to 2008 - and enjoyed every minute. We are back temporarily in the UK - but sunshine beckons us again for next summer.

26th July 2005 - Andraitz

Posted at 12:27 PM, Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Arrived here late yesterday afternoon and saving pennies, chose to anchor this time as opposed to going into Club de Vela.

The bigger boat achorage is closer to the port entrance, on the starboard side.  The holding is not reputed as good - but we found a spot amid the othe yachts and set  down into 7 metres about 100 M from the shore.  No issues through the night but today as a SW came in with some gusts, I found we were dragging and had to reset it.

Paul and the girls were ashore so I enlisted the help of a German chap - Deisel - who owned the old wooden boat Swagman appeared to like snuggling up to.  It's named 'Southern Cross' and is a wooden 'gentlemans yacht' built on the Clyde in 1926.    Bloody great bowspirit which when we dragged, almost impaled our biminin.  Certainly bent the flagstaff!

Reset OK but clearly this bottoms not good - lots of weed came up when we lifted the anchor to reset - but we moved 30 metres up wind and we seem to be holding OK now.  Have let out almost 40 metres of chain in the 7 / 8 metres so should be OK tonight - although my swinging circle is somewhat large.

Spent this morning doing boat chores whilst the crews gone shopping.  Have found a chafe spot on the port side of the biminin top where the boom has obviously rubbed when under sail.  Used some grey leather we've picked up somewhere to sew on a patch.  Pretty neat job if I say so myself - but I'll have to sew a second one on the starboard side to ensure it matches up.

No movement plans for this afternoon except left elbow helping my lips find the rim of a can.  Got to go - the crew have just radioed from shore and want a lift back out.

Cheers

Andriatz Bottom

Dived just now to keep cool and check anchor. The waters murky - but bottom appears to be flat and rocky with big weed patches. If you ever anchor here - ensure you use loads of chain.

I know what "grey material" you are talking about - I seem to recall the really expensive shop where it was purchased :-)

As for anchoring, perhaps the old fishermans type would be better/safer on rock/seaweed..................but what do I know, I'm just missing the blue sky and cool beer whilst laying down some fresh straw in my wee cave.

Having a bit of a pallaver with the (soon to be) boat - almost told them today to lubricate it generously and stick it where the sun don't shine. But hey tomorrows a different day, and my mercurial shift may have swung back again.

Take Care.

Gerry

Hi McMatey,
Sorry to hear of any issues on the new yacht - perseverence will win the day! And no - the leather patch is not my welders glove but some grey leather acquired in Lagos from a proper sailmaker!
Love to Sara
